Gifts & Registry
A Short Note from Sami
Over the years I’ve worn many hats—decorative baker for Dolce & Amaro, sous chef, teacher, hobby event planner and seamstress…so as you can imagine, our home will feature everything we need, from sewing machines and steam presses to every tool required to bake a three‑tier wedding cake, lol.
Because we know that traveling with gifts can be a hassle, we’ve ditched the gift registry. Just bring your smiles, support and a healthy appetite!
Our intimate walimah will be all about gratitude, humility, and celebrating the blessings we already share. Having been a bridesmaid eleven times (yes, I’m basically the Black Katherine Heigl of 27 Dresses), I promise this won’t be a stuffy affair. Come ready to relax, enjoy good company, and unite friends and family in joy. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
Our Heritage
Honoring the rich traditions, wisdom, and blessings that have shaped our paths and will guide our journey together
A Tapestry of Faith and Heritage
Our union celebrates the beautiful convergence of cultures united under the guidance of Islam. As Allah (ﷻ) says, “And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.” Together, we honor the languages of our ancestors, the wisdom that guides us, and the Islamic values that will shape our family’s future.
Sam
African American & Lakota Sioux Heritage
Carrying forward the resilience of ancestors who survived the Middle Passage and the wisdom of Lakota traditions that honor the sacred connection between all living beings and Mother Earth. The rhythm of jazz and blues that speaks to the soul, and the Lakota teaching of “Mitákuye Oyás’iŋ” (all my relations) that recognizes our interconnectedness. Firstly guided by Islamic principles that teach us to be grateful for our blessings and to treat all creation with compassion.
Embracing values of community care, spiritual resilience, respect for elders, and the understanding that we are caretakers of this earth. Raised in the Islamic faith, Sam weaves together ancestral wisdom with the teachings of Islam, knowing that as the Prophet (ﷺ) said in his final sermon, “the best of men are those who are best to their wives.”
Uchenna
Igbo Canadian Heritage
Rooted in “Igwe bu ike” (unity is strength) and the concept of “Chi” – the personal spirit that guides one’s destiny, now beautifully aligned with Islamic belief in Allah’s divine plan. Combined with Canadian values of multiculturalism and peaceful coexistence, the tradition of “Umunna” (extended family support) mirrors the Islamic concept of ummah (community).
Embracing principles of hard work and education as pathways to progress, knowing that “seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” Uchenna finds strength in collective decision-making while understanding that in Islamic marriage, his wife’s rights are sacred above all others. As the Prophet (ﷺ) advised, “Your wife has a right over you,” emphasizing that a husband’s duty to his wife takes precedence over all other relationships.
United in Faith and Heritage
From the ancestral drums of West Africa to the sacred pipes of the Great Plains, from the bustling markets of Igboland to the vast prairies of Canada, our heritage flows like rivers meeting the sea. In Islam, we find the perfect unifying thread that weaves our diverse backgrounds into one beautiful tapestry.
As Allah (ﷻ) reminds us: “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.” Our marriage is a testament to this divine wisdom, where cultural diversity strengthens rather than divides.
In our Islamic union, we understand that no relationship comes before our commitment to one another. As the Prophet (ﷺ) taught, “The most perfect of believers in faith are those who are best in character, and the best of you are those who are best to their wives.” We say “Pidamaya” (thank you) and “Dalu” (thank you) to our ancestors as we step forward, carrying their blessings and Allah’s guidance into our future.
